ABU DHABI, UAE

The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Huawei to strengthen collaboration and support research and development, capability-building, and the exchange of knowledge as a means to upgrade the entire energy sector in the emirate.

The agreement was signed in an event during GITEX Technology Week 2021 in Dubai, attended by His Excellency Mohammad Juma bin Jarsh Al Falasi, DoE Undersecretary, along with Eng. Saif Salem Bamadhaf, Director of IT and Smart Government Services at the DoE; Mr. Jiawei Liu, CEO of Huawei UAE; and several executives and officials from both organisations.

As per the MoU, the two parties agree to identify and explore opportunities in energy areas, in addition to boosting collaboration and exchanging support and ideas in areas of potential cooperation. The agreement also provides for developing a roadmap to deploy intelligent applications in the energy sector and benchmark them with successful global practices. This, in turn, enables the sector to play a bigger role in the emirate’s strategic vision for the energy industry.

H.E. Mohammad bin Jarsh Al Falasi noted that, “The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy is always looking to facilitate cooperation with various local and international stakeholders, as well as to promote efficiency in the sector, which, in turn, would help fulfil our government’s vision and directives to support and develop key sectors, empowering them to achieve sustainable development. To that end, we are always working to expand our network of partners, tap into all of our resources, and embrace advanced technology to achieve our objectives.”

“In light of the rapid developments brought on by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, we must strive to always be up to date, identify promising opportunities and potential challenges, and find innovative solutions to forecast the future of energy and expedite the transition towards clean and sustainable sources,” H.E. Al Falasi continued.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Huawei – a true global leader in technology – and we look forward to working together, exchanging knowledge and experience, and implementing joint initiatives,” H.E. asserted. “Huawei is one of the most prominent global companies in the advanced technology sector, and we look forward to adopting international best practices and exploring new prospects for cooperation in order to achieve our strategic goals.”

For his part, Mr. Jiawei Liu, CEO of Huawei UAE, said: “We are honoured to announce our partnership with the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy. As part of this collaboration, Huawei will leverage its long-standing expertise in the information technology sector to help DoE in unlocking new opportunities in the energy sector that would drive the sector further. This step underlines Huawei’s commitment to supporting Abu Dhabi’s economic vision 2030 and the emirate’s continued efforts to invest in and harness the latest technologies to ensure future economic growth.”

Areas of Cooperation

By signing the MoU, the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy and Huawei pledge to cooperate on various areas, working together to implement measures that would boost the efficiency of Information Technology and Information Security, as well as to develop a training programme to enhance the capabilities for DoE employees. Moreover, the agreement calls for exploring prospects to expand the regulation of services provided to customers in Abu Dhabi, including smart metering, smart grid, and mobile application development, among others, through the Information Technology and Information Security profiles.

The two parties will also work together to develop AI-based, hi-tech solutions to analyse health, safety, and environment (HSE) incidents in the sector, as well as to assess performance based on available data in order to provide early warning for potential risks. They will additionally collaborate to develop sustainable energy solutions to address Abu Dhabi’s sustainability and energy and water efficiency agenda.
